How to Resize a Video Online — 3 Steps

Choose a target resolution, upload, and download your resized MP4 — processed server-side with FFmpeg's Lanczos scaling filter.

  1. Upload your video

Select any MP4, WebM, MKV, MOV, AVI, FLV, or WMV file up to 100 MB. This tool accepts 4K (3840 × 2160) input — other tools on this site are limited to 1080p.

  2. Choose a target resolution

Pick a preset — 4K, 2K, 1080p, 720p, or 480p — or switch to Custom and enter your own width. Height is computed automatically to maintain your original aspect ratio.

  3. Download your resized video

Click Resize video and download the MP4 as soon as it's ready. The output uses H.264 video and AAC audio — compatible with every platform and editing application.

Common Video Resizing Use Cases

Resolution affects upload speed, file size, and platform acceptance — matching the target resolution before uploading saves time.

4K→1080pDownscale 4K camera footage to 1080p before uploading to YouTube or sharing
SIZEReduce file size — halving the resolution roughly quarters the file size
SOCIALScale to 720p for Instagram and TikTok — their encoders don't benefit from 4K input
EMAILDownscale to 480p for email-shareable video clips without hitting attachment limits
EDITCreate a low-res proxy for editing on slower machines, then replace with the original
LIMITMeet platform upload requirements — some platforms reject files above a certain resolution

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this preserve the original aspect ratio?

Yes, for all standard presets. The preset heights are computed for 16:9 content — if your video is a different aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3 or 9:16 vertical), the height is calculated proportionally from your target width, so there are no black bars or distortion.

Why does resizing also reduce file size?

A smaller resolution means fewer pixels per frame. Fewer pixels means less data for the codec to encode, producing a smaller file. As a rough guide, halving the resolution (e.g. 1080p to 540p) typically reduces file size by 60–75% depending on the original bitrate.

Can I upload 4K videos?

Yes — the Video Resizer specifically accepts up to 4K (3840 × 2160) input. Other tools on MediaFormatter are limited to 1080p input, but the resizer is designed for downscaling 4K footage.

What scaling algorithm is used?

We use FFmpeg's Lanczos resampling filter, which is the highest-quality algorithm available for video downscaling. It preserves sharpness and fine details better than bilinear or bicubic methods.

Is my video kept private?

Yes. Your video and the resized output are automatically deleted from our servers within 60 minutes of processing. We never store, sell, or analyse your content.

Is this tool completely free?

Yes — no subscription, no watermarks, and no account required. Just upload, choose a resolution, and download.
