How to Extract Subtitles from a Video — 3 Steps

FFmpeg pulls the embedded subtitle stream straight out of your video file and saves it as an editable text subtitle.

  1. Upload a video with embedded subtitles

Select a video file that contains a subtitle track — MKV files most commonly do. Most plain MP4s from cameras and phones do not include subtitles.

  2. Choose the subtitle format

Pick SRT for universal compatibility, VTT for HTML5 web players, or ASS/SSA to keep styling and positioning.

  3. Download your subtitle file

Download the extracted subtitles immediately — the file is deleted from our servers within 60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it say no subtitles were found?

Most video files do not contain embedded subtitle tracks. This tool only works when subtitles are already embedded inside the file — common in MKV rips and some MP4s. It cannot generate subtitles from speech.

What subtitle formats can I export?

You can export to SRT (the most universal, supported everywhere), WebVTT (for HTML5 web players and <track>), or ASS/SSA (which preserve styling, fonts, and positioning).

Can it extract subtitles burned into the picture?

No. Subtitles that are part of the video image (hardcoded), or stored as image-based tracks such as PGS (Blu-ray) and VobSub (DVD), cannot be extracted as editable text without OCR.

Is my file stored on your servers?

No permanently. Your video and the extracted subtitle file are automatically deleted within 60 minutes of processing. We do not retain, sell, or analyse your files.
