Which Image Format Should You Choose?

Each format has a different trade-off between file size, quality, and compatibility. Here's when to use each one.

JPGJPEG — Best for photos and complex images. Lossy compression, universal compatibility. Use for email attachments, social media, and anywhere file size matters.
PNGPNG — Best for graphics, logos, and screenshots with text. Lossless, supports transparency. Larger than JPEG for photos.
WebPWebP — Best for web delivery. 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. Supports transparency. Supported in all modern browsers.
AVIFAVIF — Next-generation web format. Up to 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. Supported in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari 16+.
TIFFTIFF — Best for print and archival. Lossless LZW compression. Large files — use only when maximum quality is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting JPEG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG is lossless — it stores the output exactly. But if your source JPEG already has compression artefacts, those artefacts are permanently baked into the pixels. Converting to PNG makes the file larger without recovering the lost detail. Convert to PNG only when you need lossless storage going forward — not to "fix" a compressed image.

Is WebP better than JPEG?

For web delivery, yes — WebP typically achieves 25–35% smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality, and also supports lossless mode and transparency. It is supported in all modern browsers. Use WebP for images displayed on websites. Use JPEG when sending to people who might use older software.

What is AVIF and should I use it?

AVIF is a modern format derived from the AV1 video codec. It typically achieves 50% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality — making it the most efficient format available. It is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+. Use it for web images where you control the output and your audience uses modern browsers.

What formats does this converter accept as input?

You can upload JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, and static GIF files up to 100 MB. For animated GIFs, use the Video to GIF tool instead.

Is my image kept private?

Yes. Your image and the converted output are automatically deleted from our servers within 60 minutes of processing. We never store, sell, or analyse your content.

Is this converter completely free?

Yes — no subscription, no watermarks, and no account required. Just upload, choose a format, and download.
