Video resolution determines how many pixels are in each frame — and it has a direct effect on file size, upload speed, and how a video looks on different screens. Knowing when and how to resize a video saves storage space, speeds up uploads, and ensures your footage meets platform requirements. This guide covers everything you need to make the right call.
How Resolution Affects File Size
Video resolution is measured in pixels — width × height. A 1920 × 1080 (Full HD) frame contains 2,073,600 pixels; a 3840 × 2160 (4K) frame contains 8,294,400 pixels — exactly four times as many. Because a codec like H.264 has to encode all those pixels, a 4K video is roughly 3–4× larger than the same footage at 1080p at comparable quality.
Halving the width and height quarters the pixel count, which dramatically reduces file size. A 10-minute 4K video at 200 MB will typically compress to 50–70 MB at 1080p. This matters for upload quotas, email attachments, and storage costs.

A practical rule: keep the highest-quality version as your master copy and create a downscaled version for distribution. Never discard the original — you cannot recover resolution you have discarded.

The result looks sharper and has less aliasing — jagged diagonal lines and moire patterns — than other algorithms.
